????Drums????!

Question:

????Drums????

I have Zildijan Cymbals....What is better to use on them...Cleaning Polish or Spray???

Answers:

The true answer to this is mixed.

Like tlk11067 suggested, leaving them dirty can add to their "mellowness".

The reason: as dirt (oxidation, tarnish, dust, etc.) builds up in the tonal grooves the cymbal shimmers differently and begins to have a darker sound. Some drummers like this and as a result, never clean their cymbals. That is other than to dry them off should they get wet. You should never let your cymbals stay wet.

If you like your cymbals to sound bright then you should clean them.

If you polish them be aware that you will need to polish them more often to keep them clean. When cymbals are new they have a "factory patina" that can prevent them from tarnishing. When you use Brasso or similar polishes you eventually remove that patina (and usually the logos as well). From then on your cymbals will get dirty very quickly. To much moisture and they can go green (copper oxide) on you.

If you prefer to leave the patina (and logos) in place and still clean them then use one of the spray cleaners like the one from Sabian. Don't scrub the cymbal and don't clean them too often.

In between cleanings, use a dry soft cloth to wipe down your cymbals. This will keep them dust free and remove the moisture that results from condensation and fingerprints. They will stay cleaner longer.

The "wipe often, spray clean occasionally" method is the one I use.

Some drummers who want to accelerate the mellowing/darkening of their cymbals will scrub the patina off with cleanser and then never clean them again.

One more tip. If you really like the way a drummer's cymbals sound and have the opportunity, ask them what they do.
