on every instrument a dotted quarter note is held the same, it just depends on your time signature.
If it's a number over four like 4/4, 2/4, 3/4, or C (which is just 4/4) it is held for 1.5 (one and a half) beats.
When your time sig. is over 8 it's held for twice that length (3 beats)
