Is a blow to the back of the head with a paperweight a good way to put somebody down?

I once heard it on an old Radio Show, "Harry Lyme, the Third Man", played by Orson Welles.
After foiling a kidnapping on the Dover to Calais Ferry, the kid he rescues exclaims, "Wow, he's knocked out!".
Lyme's response was to the effect of "Well Timmy, when something as heavy as that paperweight is brought to bear against something as brittle as the human skull, complete and total unconsciousness is usually the result..."
So that got me curious, and now I want to try it...

That is a good way to kille them if you do not now what you are doing.
