Can Cinema staff search your bag before you go into watch the film?!

Can Cinema staff search your bag before you go into watch the film?
Last time I went they were searching people's bags and confiscating food bought in that was not purchased on the premises. I begrudge paying £3 for a packet of M&M's that's half the price elsewhere. I know they insist that you can't bring food in but are they allowed to, by law, search your bag?

i begrudge paying their prices for sweets and drink. i dont think they can search you unless you are carrying a carrier bag or back pack. take your sweets in your normal handbag or wear a coat and fill your pockets etc. if they werent so expensive then more people would but food from them as its dear enough now just for the tickets! do what i do and put curlywurlies in your socks! (only joking but its a good idea)
