Question:

I used to do karaokee dj and now I don't because of my schedules how do i continue..?

singing. I sing all the time and I know that I'm not that good but I have been told otherwise by numerous people how do you know if the people are lying to you and when they are not. I want to continue singing but I don't think that I am good enough. I was a karaokee dj for 5 years and have somewhat perfected myself but not as much as I would like to and I love to sing! What should I do?

Answers:

I can relate to your sistuation because I also have been a part time kJ for about 5 years now. I love to sing as well and that is how I got I got into being a kJ. I didn't want to wait 2 or more hours to sing a song at a main karaoke venue so i bought my own equipment and eventually had enough to do gigs. I have found that there is not enough of a demand to be a kJ full time in my area so i do it still for the money when I can.

I have decided that i would really rather sing myself rather then host a karaoke show where others sing. I am starting to compile a list of all the soundtracks I can do since there are a lot and I have never really written them all down. In my case i am going to concentrate on classic lounge music like Sinatra or Bobby Darin ect... I am going to buy a tuxedo in a few months to look professional. when I am ready i am going to try to find some gigs even if it is singing for an hour or two somewhere. I have already sung at retirement homes mostly for free. Down the road i will probably learn to play a keyboard since most places which have live music want to have someone play an instrument. It is common for some smaller groups to actually play alnog with karaoke or soundtracks while playing along with a guitar or keyboard and playing live gets you a lot more money then just karaoke. If there is someone you trust and can also sing or play an instument you can team up and perform together. Make a demo cd with at least 2 or 3 of your songs on it to submit to a potential venue. I used my karaoke machine at home powered by home stereo amp and recoded on to a cd burner and got a very good demo cd that way withou having to pay big bucks for recording studio time. You can also do free functions for publicity. you will find out if you are good enough to be paid to sing.

You will either have to follow your desire to sing and try to do something more serious or resign yourself that you are not cut out to be into music seriously and just keep doing it as a hobby. That's where i am at right now. Hope that helps.
