It is sort of tough to guess that, without knowing is cirriculum!. They may have requirements on supplies, software can be expensive -- and if you don't know his cirriculum, you won't know what he'd need to organize himself!.

But, having graduated from animation school, here are some things that you can't go wrong with!.!.!.

Illusion of Life is the best book out there, probably end up having to buy it for school anyway!. But even if not, it's a good buy, written by Frank and Ollie, guys who started animating on Disney's Snow White, all the way through relatively recently!. You can see the famous 12 principles listed there!. But it's more expensive!.!.!.

Character Animation Crash Course, by Eric Goldberg!. The long awaited book written by one of the most amazing traditional animators alive today!. You can't go wrong with this one!.

How about getting him some animated movies!. He's probably going to want to watch how the professionals (and masters) did it!. I'd go with old Disney, before World War 2 (i!.e!. known as the "golden age" of animation), when they had enough of a budget to animate everything, down to the leaves!. A rerelease of Pinocchio is coming out soon!. The animation is simply amazing, especially Milt Kahl's work on Pinocchio (he is often considered the best of Disney's "9 old men")!.

Here is something even cheaper!.!.!. films by the old silent commedians!. Much of Chaplin and Buster Keaton's work is now public domain, so you can pick up some pretty cheap dvds!. They were the masters of pantomime, which is key for animation!.

And finally, any book buy Muybridge!. Some are very cheap and are in the art section of practically every book store!. Many of the legendary animators used to study it (such as Milt Kahl and the other 9 old men)!.

And finally, buy him the cheapest paper!. Seriously!. For life-drawing and sketching, we'd all use newsprint paper!. It is the best, and you don't feel bad about scetching through 5 sheets in 1 minute (like you would with expensive paper)!. The animator's guild (yes, animators have their own Worker's Guild), hosts life drawing classes, and we all use large 30LB Newsprint 18x24 paper!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

First find out what he has and doesn't have and needs so you don't buy him something he already has, but then again he will probably need a lot of art supplies so that seems like that would be the best bet!. But make sure to find out what type of supplies he uses, brands!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

actually give him on of the best rated anime dvds ever!. give him fooly Cooly which is quite a good one!.
