I am not so sure about the underachiever part, but I will recommend you Basilisk!.
It is about to rival warrior clans, The Iga and the Kouga, that are in the midst of war and whoever wins this war will have power over the other clan for I believe the next 1,000 years (May be 10,000 but I am not sure) The action in this is great as well!. Much better than the action in Bleach or Naruto IMO because it is so fast paced and they don't take as much time to talk and all of those things!. It's too bad though because the anime is pretty short!. I think it is around 20 episodes if I am not mistaken!. Www@Enter-QA@Com

I got something that is in the same category as naruto but is only 5 episodes long!. Samual L Jackson is voicing 2 characters in it and its all about samurais!
If you didn't like seeing too much gore in Naruto i discourage you seeing this cause theres about 50 times the violence and blood and its all just in 5 episodes!
