How did Marvel Comics erase Spider-Man's marriage from history?!

Question: How did Marvel Comics erase Spider-Man's marriage from history!?
Answers:
Spidey and Mary Jane made a deal with Mephisto to save Aunt May who was dying!. For her life, they allowed Mephisto to alter time, so they never fell in love and never married!. This was good for Mephisto because he was able to feast on their souls' despair!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

The One More Day storyline was used to re-start Spider-man as the Marvel thought that a married superhero was a bit boring and making Peter Parker single again would inject some new life into the character!.

Basically, Aunt May is shot and Peter Parker/Spiderman searches for help in saving her life!. He meets the demon Mephisto, who offers to save her life if Spider-Man/Parker agrees to give up his marriage to Mary Jane!. Peter and Mary Jane agree, and this part of their history (20 real life years) is erased from all memory so that they have never been married!.

The deal with Mephisto would leave only a single, subconscious piece of their souls to remember, allowing Mephisto to feast on those pieces' pain for eternity!.

They still dated, but split up so the character still does appear in the series!.

Many readers thought this was a stupid idea, afterall, Aunt May has died a few times before and was quite old!. Readers found it hard to believe that dispite the marital problems the couple suffered, that they would never give each other up!.
