It doesn't get any darker than Elfen Lied!.!.!.the only non-hentai cartoon/anime ever to receive an NC17 rating!.
Evangelion is fairly dark, especially the movie!.!.!.but it is an anime that needs to be watched several times to get even a rudimentary knowledge of it!. Anno is a pompous schmuck, milking the show for everything it is worth, but he is also brilliant!. He has a command of Freudian psychology that is very deep!.!.!.and it takes a while to catch onto where he is coming from and where he is going!. I mean, who else names all of his female characters after Japanese warships!? LOLWww@Enter-QA@Com

Try Chrno Crusade!? It isn't dark, but it's a very suspenseful and compelling plot!. I would recommend reading it though, the ending is different in the anime!. A lot of interesting views on religion!.
