The easy answer is that the superhero genre began during a time of war!. Though the earliest of the superhero captains -- Captain Marvel -- was introduced in 1940 and the U!.S!. was not yet at war, American were very much aware of the wars raging around them and there was a martial spirit to the times!. And yet, even obviously military-based characters like Captain America did not actually enjoy the rank of captain, but were just *called* Captain!.
Another, more likely answer is the seminal influence of Wash Tubbs -- a popular comic strip from the '30s and '40s!. Wash Tubbs featured a character called Captain Easy whose spin-off series lasted into the '80s and spawned the "soldier of fortune" mini-genre in comics!. The solider of fortune archetype was one of the forerunners of the superhero genre, and so the appellation "captain" just stuck!. Www@Enter-QA@Com
