Trying to potect the Sand Village, Gaara is beaten in a battle and kidnapped in order for the Akatsuki to extract Shukaku the Sand Spirit and also known as the One-Tailed Beast, from within him!.
Because once a Demon is extracted from the Jinchuuriki (person who posseses the demon), the person will die!. And because the Akatsuki were able to extract Shukaku from Gaara, thus, resulting into his death!.
But after Naruto and his team (Sakura, Kakashi, Neji, Lee, TenTen, & Gai) retrieve his dead body, an elder from the Sand Village uses a jutsu, sacrifising her own life to bring Gaara back form the dead!.
And because Gaara's Shukaku is not in him no more, his ability to manipulate sand is now lost!.
