I've answered this before!. Here is a pasing of what I said:

if you want to read the mainstream comics I'd suggest starting off with Batman: Hush, which gives you a good picture of how Batman's enemies are depicted nowadays in the comics!. It also tells you how Batman's life has changed over the years!. The "sequel," Hush Returns, isn't nearly as good!. Don't feel pressed to read it!. Once you have read Hush (which comes in two volumes), I'd read these comics in the order given: 1) Batman Year One; the foundation for Batman's modern history!. 2) A Death in the Family; the events inside have haunted Batman ever since (the comic came out in 1988, but to Batman it would be about 5 years ago)!. 3) Batman: Knightfall; Batman's back is broken in the first volume (Broken Bat), and the other two (Who Rules the Night and Knightsend) are about his search to reclaim his abilities and city!. 4) War Drums, War Games and War Crimes; These detail a gang war started accidentally by one of the lesser heroes in Gotham (she's looking for respect, but ends up dead)!. This comic has greatly impacted recent comics!. BTW, War Drums is sort of an "Act One" for War Games, and War Crimes are essentially the conclusion!. That's why they're all listed together!. 5)Under the Hood; be aware that this, like Hush, comes in two separate volumes!. They have largely impacted Batman's world recently, and are a comic's milestone!. 6) Batman and Son; a retcon (retroactive continuity) of Son of the Demon (a comic I haven't read, and thus can't comment on), this comic says that the "son" mentioned in SotD remained in Talia's care!. The events inside are important to current comics!. 7)I'd recommend a subscription to Superman/Batman, Batman, and/or Batman in Detective Comics!. Super/Bat features Superman and Batman co-starring in a monthly comic, and mostly explores/alters/defines their relationship!. Batman tells mostly "action stories," and Detective is about the detective side of Batman (duh)!.

Three other volumes that will not define, but rather enrich, your comics experience, are, in the order you should read them, Batman: Haunted Knight, Batman: the Long Halloween, Catwoman: When in Rome, and Batman: Dark Victory!.

also, there are many historical volumes you can buy if you want to read comics from a different era (or "age"--golden [1939-1957], silver [1958-1969], bronze [1970-1985], and "platinum" or "modern" [1986-present])!. For more information, E-mail me, and I'll tell you about those volumes!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

My best advice is to go to a local comic store and start looking up compilation graphic novels, they have bound comics that hold anywhere from 8-40 issues in one book, its a great way to catch up

p!.s!.
I've read the hush graphic novel is one of the best batman stories around, so its prolly a good place to startWww@Enter-QA@Com

DC publish various collections of the early stories, but some of the more modern stories that are essential are as follows:

Knightfall volumes 1-3

Hush volumes 1 and 2

A Death in the Family

The Dark Knight Returns

Arkham Asylum

Dark Victory

The Long Halloween

Those should keep you occupied for a while ;)Www@Enter-QA@Com
