Best graphic novel for one who has never read one?!

Question: Best graphic novel for one who has never read one!?
I'm looking to read a graphic novel and am looking for recommendations!. Mind you, I'm NOT looking for MANGA!. I was thinking something fairly serious, possibly with an action based plot!. I would prefer it to have a plot with some historical or scientific or political background or anything along those lines!. I would like it to be either a short series or a single but I'm open minded to a longer series if anyone really praises one!.
Or, if there is one you really enjoyed from any other genre, feel free to answer as well!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Why are you not looking for manga!? There's a huge variety out there and you can get all kinds of material!.

THE SILENT SERVICE is about the US/Japanese relationship and Japan's current debate on remilitarisation and defence; EAGLE is about a non-white American running for president: DOMU is about a series of mysterious murders on a downtown sink estate; MONSTER is about a doctor who acts according to his conscience, yet finds this has terrible consequences; SANCTUARY is about two orphans of the Khmer Rouge who rise to prominence in crime and politics in modern Japan!.

Give these books a try - you may be surprised!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I'd say Craig Thompson's masterpiece Blankets!. It was one of my firsts, and I still read it to this day!. It's about a christain and his life stuggles growing up!. I think that if you picked it up, you'd enjoy it!.

I mean, I DID!
