The demons in the show Inuyasha?!

I've tried to find the actual stories they are based on, but all I come up with is the show as reference!.

Does anyone know if the stories and characters (the Soul Piper, for example) are based on actual Japanese legends, or were they just made up for the show!?Www@Enter-QA@Com
