I'll describe how the process works in Japan!.
Step 1!. You make doujin!. This is essentially self made and self published work!. For example, you make a manga, or computer game, or right a novel by yourself, and you sell it by yourself!.
Step 2!. Your doujin work becomes famous amongst fans!.
Step 3!. You get approached by bigger companies, you will either contract you to make more manga, games, or novels, which they will publish in magizines or sell in stores!.
