I like the dubbed better because the voices just sound more interesting and genuine!. THis is just my opinion!. I listened to all of the subs first, but I never got into Death Note, but when I watched it in english after it was premiered on television (adult swim), I was utterly surprised!. Was this the series I just watched several months (maybe almost a year) ago!? They chose such a brilliant voice cast!. I loved how I couldn't immediately recognized the actors!. With the exception of Brad Swaile, Brian Drummond, and Kirby Morrow, most of the voices are either new or that they are actors who concentrate on other acting (stage acting, camera work, etc!.) and less on voice overs for anime!. It was sooo cool that I didn't recognize voices because it makes Death Note sound even more genuine when hearing new voices instead of the same ones over and over!. When there are different voices, it would sound like actual different people opposed to the same voices for every different anime, such as hearing Steve Blum, Vic Mignogna, Johnny Yong Bosch, etc!. Don't get me wrong!. These actors are among my favorite voice actors, but it just makes it more unique if the dub directors and producers put together a unique voice cast and crew, making the dub more unique than other dubs!. This is why I prefer Death Note dubbed over other dubs!.
But now dub vs sub!. I liked the dubbed better mainly because of the voices!. I wasn't really sure about Light's voice in the english dubbed!. I might actually prefer his original voice since the english is slightly high pitched!. But over all, Brad Swaile did a phenomenal job as Light!. But for the rest of the english cast (except maybe Mello), I loved the voices MORE than the original!. They fitted the characters better!. also, I liked how the acting of the characters were even more realistic and fitting (notably: Misa, Matsuda, Near, Ryuk, Soichiro, Wedy, Aiber, Naomi Misora, Higuchi, Matt, and Namikawa)!. This was a surprise to me because I almost never liked the english dubbed better than the original japanese counterpart!. Brad Swaile nailed Light's maniacal personality perfectly!. Though the Japanese is somewhat slightly better in voice pitch and range, I have to admit!.
The awesome thing about having a really good dub is that I can sit back and watch Death Note in English (my first language), syncing the mouth movements with the mouth flaps!. This makes watching Death Note even more enjoyable than watching subs!. (Watching a good dub and loving it is something I don't do often at all!.) As much as I love the dub, I do have to admit that there were to scenes that might be better in Japanese, though was done very well in english, was the "I am L" scene and the last evil laugh of Light in the final episode!.
