Question: Why are black, non-anime characters usually the genius type (or have the same hairstyles)!?
This question has been on my mind, for a while now!. I don’t have a problem with it, but I just think it’s getting a little boring & overused!. For instance: AJ from Fairly Odd Parents was really smart, Taranee from WITCH was really smart, and even that black kid from Kim Possible was really smart!. It seems like the only roles for a black character is to either be the rocket scientist, the loner, or the hothead of the group!. Why can’t they (for once) allow the black character be the arrogant, silly, or gothic one!?

The other thing that is constantly overused is how the artists always draw black men either with short hair or no hair!. Who here wants to see some more dreadlocks! *raises up hand* Now if they can spend hours drawing long (or shoulder-length) hair for caucasian characters, then why not give the black guys some!? You might not think black men have long hair, and I admit I use to didn’t think so either, until I saw this book at my walmart:

Well, it has to do with racial perception, I suppose!.

If you noticed something else about these shows, you realise that, usually, if they make a black kid smart, he might be the only (or close to being the only) black person in the show!.

So, I suppose the networks need to show them as being "the smart ones" so that other black people won't get offended and sue the network for racial profiling or something!.

That's why they make a lot of white kids in shows like fairly odd parents and Kim Possible seem sort of white-trash, like!.!.!.with bad teeth and stupid remarks!.

Anyways!.!.!.!.I don't know why they bother!.
I mean, it's a cartoon!
Would anyone really get offended!?
I'm a white female and I don't get offended when I see girls my age constantly being portrayed as brain-dead sluts!.!.!.
:l

And I also agree about dreadlocks!. :P
My ethics teacher this past year had them and it looked AWESOME!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

YES!. DREADLOCKS!. SOME CARTOONIST OUT THERE NEEDS TO READ THIS!.!.!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I think its an attempt to avoid stereotyping!.
In a world where black people are seen as second class, consistently portraying them otherwise helps to break that stereotype!.
Of course, when a group is consistently portrayed in a particular way, all that happens is a new stereotype is built :)

Ideally, racial groups would be spread across the various role types in fiction, but it takes a while to get there - authors fear accusations of racism if they happen to put a particular character in a particular role type, so for a while the depictions are non-realistic!. (and by 'a while' I mean 'a few decades')

Its weird, but its just how the human mind works!.

Here's to a day in the future when people don't even notice the particular color scheme an illustrator felt like using on a given day! ;)Www@Enter-QA@Com

B/c they don't want people to think that they have something against black people,so they never make them stupid or something negative, only geniuses and other stuff!.the rest of the stuff(being a hothead, and loner)is b/c they r using steorotypes(like the big strong gang black guys from run down neighborhoods and stuff)idk about the loner, tho!.they don't want to get sued,so they never make them something negative like arrogant, silly(this 1 isn't that negative, but still!.!.!.),or goth!.there are still racists around,so they don't want to make themselves seem like they r racist!.
I think its b/c they use the common hairstyles for the characters!.but dreads r also popular,so idk!.!.!.they also probably don't know that its possible for african american guys to have long hair, too!ill raise my hand for more dreads,2!they're cool, even tho I'm not african american!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
