Well, this is Naruto's favorite technique, he uses it all the time, to annoy the opponent, to confuse him, even to use rasengan, because he can't do it like Jiraya, or Kakashi, so he has to use a clone to rotate the chakra in his hand or to control it, shortly to make it look spherical!. As about the smoke I think that the smoke marks the apparition and disappearance of the clone!. When he summons the it seems logical, because at that moment he can change his place and confuse the opponent!. When it disappear, I think that it is because it must be similar with the appearance!. I think!. Not sure!. Hope that it helped you!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

when they're defeated it would be a waste of chakra to keep the clone so they'll disappear!. The puff of smoke is just to show that it is disappearing (because it is an animation) as opposed to just vanishing instantly, if that makes sense!. As for the herim jutsu, i think it's pretty obvious that the smoke is there to keep it PG!.

Early in the series when Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura go on one of their first big missions to the hidden water village i think!? Anyway, they're fighting a skilled ninja near the water is all i remember, and Naruto turns himself into a weapon sasuke throws to decieve the enemy!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

well to catch the attention of people ofcourse!. lol xD well yeah!. thats my theory!. and the guy that type a whole load of stuff down there!. well yah he just went to a site and copied and pasted!. lol xD all he's telling you is what a clone is!. and your question was why is there smoke!. lol xD soo yah that guy is dumb!!

Shadow Clone Technique
The Shadow Clone Technique (影分身の術, Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!?, Viz "Art of the Shadow Doppelganger", UK DVD "Art of Shadow Body Splitting", English TV "Shadow Clone Jutsu") creates actual copies, not illusions, of the user with whatever damage and weapons the original may have!. The user's chakra is evenly distributed among every clone, giving each clone a fraction of the user's overall power!. Because of this, the technique itself is considered dangerous; when creating multiple copies of one's self it is possible to use up all of one's chakra fairly quickly!. This is considerably more dangerous with the jutsu's forbidden form, the Multiple Shadow Clone Technique (多重影分身の術, Tajū Kage Bunshin no Jutsu!?, English TV "Multi Shadow Clone Jutsu")!. While the standard Shadow Clone Technique typically creates no more than five clones, the Multiple version allows the creation of a limitless number of clones so long as the user has enough chakra!. Due to the danger of the ability it is typically used by only the most advanced ninja, often at or above Jonin rank!. Naruto Uzumaki, however, learned the technique prior to even becoming a ninja, and thanks to his large amount of chakra he can use it to create thousands of clones and never worry about running out of chakra!.

Any experience the shadow clones gain during their existence is transferred to the user once they are dispersed (occurs at the clones discretion or after it receives a fatal or direct blow)!. This makes the technique ideal for spying, since the user can simply send a clone to spy on a target and then have the clone disperse itself to quickly pass the information back to the user!. It's also useful for training purposes, since the total amount of experience the user gains is multiplied by the total number of clones being used to train!. Using it in this manner is far more difficult, however, since a large number of clones are needed to make a significant difference in the training time!. Likewise, depending on how many clones are used for this purpose, the user can be overcome by the amount of information communicated to them with the clones' dispersion!. Although Naruto has found a number of different uses for clones, he does not become aware of this added effect until he is actually told of it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
