Because, especially in high school, people take issue with others having different interests!. It is up to you, you can be yourself and ignore what others say or you can keep your love of anime to yourself and only discuss it when you are around people who also like it!.
also, I am not saying that you are, but some people when they have an interest in something talk about that interest non-stop!. Just as people should accept you and your interests you should accept that not everyone is going to share your interests!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

It's a sad, and unfortunately true stereotype for many anime fans!.
We have an anime club at my school, and they ALL dress up in lolita/naruto headbands/bring stuffed anime animals to school -_-
However, A lot of people think these are the only types of anime fans!. SOO NOT TRUE, it's just, the ones that want to keep our dignity don't go around shouting to the world "OMFG I LOVE BLEACH KYAHKYAH KYAHHH," the people that DO do that, they get all the attention from onlookers, and thus the birth of a stereotype
I, myself am an anime fan but I don't go around pretending I can speak japanese or read manga in the middle of class!. If you go to anime conventions, you'll not only see NERDs, but a lot of "not-nerdy, cool" *best way i could describe it!.!.!.* people too (especially fanime this year, WOW there were a lot of hot guys-models, professional dancers, etc!. etc!.) plus at cons you can be yourself with a bunch of other people that like that stuff too!. (Although I can only speak for fanimecon, which is basically one big 4 night party)
So I guess it just comes down to how you conduct yourself when talking about anime!? I dunno, I tell people that I get close to, and after going "hahaha really!?!?" they pretty much forget about it!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I know exactly how you feel! In school (I am in high school by the way) I have no friends who like anime and they all think that it's weird, when they never even watched it before!
I think that it's kind of hard for some of us anime fans to admit to people that we like anime because some people ruine it for us!. Story time:
For example, a guy in the hallway at my school who I have never even talked to before came up to me kicked my locker door shut and screamed DRAGON FLAME JITSU! and were wearing an Akatsuki coat from Naruto!. I just starred at the person very confused! After that scene I went up to the kid and was like UM DO YOU WATCH NARUTO BY ANY CHANCE!? because I was hoping that I could start a conversation with them about it, but unfortunetley that didn't happen!. After I asked that they are like YES I DO BECAUSE ITS COOL IN SCHOOL FOR NARUTO TO RULE! DRAGON FLAME NO JITSU! and they ran through the hallway after that!. I didn't say mean things about the kid like some of the other students did just because he liked anime and was a little more eccentric about it then other anime fans I wasn't going to judge him based on that!. But now I do feel bad because he graduated I never got to tell him that he was saying jutsu wrong and it was not jitsu!.
But other than that I dont think people should have any reason to judge people based on what they like!. And your definetley NOT a loser, the people who said that to you are the losers because they need to expand their interests a little more!.

it's really hard to admit some of those secret interests that we all have since we're afraid that we'll get made fun of and hated for watever it may be!. but yea, i understand wat u mean sometimes!. some of my friends don't watch anime (have no idea wat it is in fact), and never gave it a chance!. im just happy for myself since i know that im lucky to have had a taste of it!.
anime is just another "cartoon" to some people!. they may not have much interest in it since it doesn't relate to their lives in any way!. people are usually interested in anime since (and this is a major top secret im letting u up on), they wish the story in the manga/anime would happen to them!. if u've always wished for something like in the anime could happen to u, then u become addicted to watching it since it puts that image, the idea into our mind!. it feels like it's already happening to u, even if it really isn't!. it's just another great way to escape from the daily stress that life gives us :) i don't see anything wrong with that!.
