Well, there's the planet Krypton (Superman's home world) and there's Kryptonite, which are crystals from Krypton!. The story of Superman's home planet has gone through a lot of upgrades over the long years since the introduction of Superman in Action Comics!.
The planet Krypton was very similar to Earth, though much older and far more scientifically advanced!. Like Earth, Krypton had oceans, forests, mountain ranges, and a wide range of climates from permanent polar ice caps to sandy deserts!.
It also had a wide variety of crystals known as Kryptonite, ranging from the size of sand grains to the size of a full city!. Many of these crystals had growth properties which could be manipulated & controlled to grow into many forms, and were also used in various computer & power systems!. While some buildings were constructed in a fashion similar to those on Earth, many more were constructed of specially-grown crystals!.
The being known as Superman on Earth was born there as Kal-El, son of the brilliant scientist Jor-El & his artist / historian wife Lara!. Though they knew Krypton was unstable, the final explosion that destroyed the planet happened at an unexpectedly advanced rate, giving only three days warning!.
Jor-El barely had time to modify a small starship that had belonged to a deceased alien (a fellow scientist & friend) which he intended to accomodate the infant as an interstellar lifeboat on a trip to Earth, a planet he had discovered during his exploration of the Universe that was populated with Humans; intelligent beings remarkably similar to Kryptonians!.
He launched the tiny starship shortly before Krypton self-destructed, and many radioactive Kryptonite crystals that had been buried in the crust were expelled and caught in the spacewarp created by the starship's engines!. These followed Kal-El to Earth and were scattered across the planet!.
Though they normally didn't seem to effect Kryptonians, they were apparently effected by Earth's sun (which also gives Kal-El his super-powers), increasing their properties to the point that green Kryptonite could hurt or even kill him after relatively short exposure!. its multiple colors!. now when hit with radiation kryptonian soil,dirt etc!. becomes green,white,gold,red,or black kryptonite!.theres where you and your mom got the impression of the colors red and green!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
Krypton (a planet) is about the same color of earth!. Kryptonite (radiated rocks from Krypton due to the destruction of the planet) can be green (by far the most common), red, blue, gold, or black!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
