Ergo Proxy, Monster (epic psychological thriller), Death Note (twisted ideals and mind games at their best), Darker than Black (feelings and will- are the dreams of the Shinigami a darkness darker than black!?), Black Blood Brothers (action, romance and a story of betrayal), Gantz (explicit! gets into the twisted mind), Fate/Stay Night (ideals vs reality, companions and the strive for love), Paranoia Agent (<-- atleast its creepy!), Devil May Cry, Black Cat (a change in the name of love, and companions for it), Black Jack 21 (the shattered past, the crumbling present- can the genius surgeon stitch them together for his closure!?), Jigoku Shoujo (will you sell your soul for revenge!?), Fullmetal Alchemist (dude its FMA- the dead have power over us, but when things go wrong only we can fix it), Ghost in the Shell, Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion (and the sequel- R2), Blood+
Most of those fit all your requirements and some just a few!. But they're all brilliant series! All Shounen, but some series that could only be classed as Shoujo are some of the saddest I've seen- like Ginban Kaleidoscope!.
(when you think about it even Elfen Lied is a Shoujo comic!)
So rethink the Shoujo genre and till you do enjoy these kick a$$ series!

It's REALLY actioney!.!.!.not exactly gorey but many many people die!.!.!.and it's full of anger filled people!. And I guess any interesting anime is sad, eh!? xD
