Try Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X!. It's the story of Kenshin Himura, an infamous assasin during the Tokugawa era!. Its storyline is divided into three major segments: the series which is composed of 95 episodes, the first OVA, Tsuioku Hen or Trust and Betrayal, which chronicles Kenshin's younger years from when he was taken in by the master who taught him the famed Hiten Mitsurugi technique up to how he became Battousai the notorious manslayer, and how he eventually got his famous cross-shaped scar, and the second OVA, Seisou Hen or Reflections, which chronicles Kenshin and Kaoru's (the leading lady of the series who eventually became his second wife) married life together and just like what the title suggests, it focuses on Kaoru's reflections of their past, particularly Kenshin's, which even after many years, continues to haunt him, and how this situation affects the lives of those closest to him!.

It also has a movie, the Ishin Shishi he no Requiem!. However, it is not as closely related to the series as the OVAs are, since it is a sort of a brief interlude in Kenshin and his gang's travels and tells the story of a swordsman whose bestfriend Kenshin Killed in the war, which the swordsman in question didn't know at first!.

This anime is good because it discuss a lot of topics like politics, religion, culture, history, philosophy, death, hope and struggle!. It also covers various genres such as action, adventure, drama, romance and comedy!.

The OVAs have great artwork and an amazing soundtrack as well!.

It also boasts great action scenes wherein some of the moves featured were inspired by real life techniques!.

Though not exactly the only anime to do this, this series also has diverse characters that can switch from friend to foe or villain to hero!.
