Tell me which country and I'll tell you what you need to do to become one!.

In western countries (the US in particular in my opinion since it isn't such a great deal in Mexico), otaku simply means an anime/manga fan, not really obsessive or anything creepy, just a person that likes those two things enough to pursue that hobby at least pretty frequently!. You don't even need to like a ton of series, with being a big fan of 1 series it would suffice!. You'd still need some degree of social life outside of the hobby though!.

In Japan however, otaku as such isn't just related to anime/manga, you could be an otaku of anything: military airplane models, firearms, fishing, golf, etc!.!.!.

However, otaku isn't a good thing in Japan (in the US the word is pretty neutral)!. In Japan, otakus are creepy, obsessive with their little hobby and have the social stigma of being like a 40 year old virgin that still lives with mommy that locks himself in the basement doing his hobby all day with no such thing as real social interacting or having anything they like outside of their hobby!.

Figure Professor Crocker from the Fairy Oddparents kind of creepy behavior where he's obsessed with Fairy Godparents, has no other hobbies other than finding them even though he's an otherwise very intelligent person and everyone in the show thinks the guy is a helpless loser

The catch is that to be a real japanese otaku, you'd have to sacrifice being respected in any way and having nothing else in your life other than your hobby driven to a complete level of creepiness that you have 0% chances of ever scoring and having kids!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

I really think it depends on the person!.
Anyone can call themselves an Otaku!.
For me it means having a deep knowledge of anime, having watched a lot of different anime from different decades, and just having a love for anime and manga!.

I consider myself an Otaku because I've spent about a year of my life watching anime (well 8400 hours of my life anyway), I have a lot of figures, dozens of box sets, hundreds of manga, many cosplay items, as well as two anime related tattoos!.
That's why my friends call me OtaQueen!. Ken in Otaku no Video was the OtaKing and my friends say I'm the OtaQueen!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Depends on where you are too!. In Tokyo no one would think of me as an Otaku but I tell my students here in the country side that I read Full Metal Alchemest and Gantz and they always ask "ahh, are you an Otaku!?" to them its pretty much anyone that reads something from Shounen Jump (bleach, Naruto, eyeshield, etc!.)

Real Otakus are sad I think, what i consider an otaku is someone who can only relate to the world through anime/manga like they get overcharged for a cup of coffee and start in, "this is just like the episode of Gundam seed where!.!.!.!."

In Japan especially it is not a positive term!. I'm all for being an anime/manga fan but when it starts making so you can't have normal relationships/interactions with other people its kind of extreme!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

If you can watch Otaku no Video, get all the references and can relate to the characters, you might be an otaku

but, there are different levels, and no number systemWww@Enter-QA@Com

well, if u saw the anime genkishen, then that wud say it!. I thnk you would talk or thnk about anime/video games 24/7!. you wud also have like poster and maybe even cosplay stuffWww@Enter-QA@Com
