Some think that it was Obito because Tobi had the same type of personalty Obito,and the same hair!. As well covering his face with a mask,and only showing one sharingan!.
So,since Tobi is Madara,Madara does have a connection with Itachi!. Madara is/was Itachi sensei!. So,Madara would know how Itachi is like!. as told by Uchiha Itachi is one of the founding fathers of the Village of Konoha!. So, he probably is more than a hundred years old already!. But the fact is according to Itachi, he is still alive!. So with this, I think, we can again consider that Madara might be the real leader of the Akatsuki and that Itachi probably know this!.
