Before computers, they drew the art with pens on clear plastic, called cels!. Then usually another person would come along and paint in the color on the same cel!. They did this for every frame and every color on each frame!. Backgrounds were usually painted more as landscapes are, a single artist painting the whole background!. So yes they did fill the colors by hand painting on clear plastic!.

I can remember one animator's account of how he knew Disney was on the skids, because they'd no longer pay for the extra color paint to fill in people's eye color!.Www@Enter-QA@Com

Okay, it goes like this: in the old days, they used to do the drawings on paper!. Then they would go over it in ink on sheets of clear acetate -- inking!. Then comes the trick: they would flip the cel over, and paint on the back!. Why!? because one reason paint changes opacity is because of the variations of the surface caused by the brushstroke!. The brushstroke was now hidden, because the only thing showing was the bottom of the paint -- which was essentially thick enough so that it showed the same opacity throughout!. If you think about it a minute, gravity means that a liquid like paint will flow to the lowest convenient point!.

First Xerography made things easier as they could xerox onto the acetate cells, then as you said, computers did make things somewhat easier!. But the trick was they painted the backs of the cels, and that helped keep the color consistent for the camera!.Www@Enter-QA@Com
