It is the continuation of Naruto!. In the last episode of Naruto, Naruto leaves to go train with Jiraya who is a very high rank ninja (sanin ranked) and Naruto leaves for a few years and the show ends there!. Then Naruto Shippuuden starts with Naruto coming back to the village and he begins training to defeat an organization that wants to capture the tailed demons (bijuu)!. Now all of the characters in Shippuuden are older and more mature (in looks) and also most of the main characters have become higher ranked ninja than they were in Naruto!.

Naruto Shippuden is generally a continuation of Naruto!. At the end of the show, Naruto leaves Konoha to train in order to get Sasuke back!. After intense training for 2 years, he finally comes back!. Every one has grown, and the Rookie Nine (His generation of Shinobi;excluding Gai's team) are all Chunin or higher!. Naruto is still stuck at Genin! (Lowest rank)!

Naruto is the first part of the Naruto series as when we see Naruto go through missons and become a Ninja!. Later on Naruto and Sasuke because Sasuke left the village after the fight Jiraya decides to train Naruto becuase in 2 years the Akatsuki will coming after Naruto becuase they want the Nine-Tailed Fox!. Shippuden is two years after Naruto leaves the Leaf Village to train and he comes back in the first episode!. Basically, everyone grows up to around 15 and they go off to get Sasuke back!.
