Is G1 Transformers a Japanese Anime or an American Cartoon or a bit of both?!
Question: it's both but it leans more 2wards anime as the Japanese made some of the episodes such as the 1st 3 and the movie among others, Toei was involed with the story, most of the staff were japanese, the character designs and backgrounds follow anime visuals.

According to one of the dvd releases of the G1 Transformers, this is how they explain it.
We(American cartoon company) took the original idea from Japanese transformers and "Americanized" it. It took off and got really poplar here and the Japanese took it and redone our version and made a more Japanese version. Then we took that back and got the armada transformers.
