Shippuden happens after the original Naruto series. It is connected because it continues the original manga plot-line.. kinda. It happens a couple years later.
Naruto Shipudden is the second part of the naruto story, taking place on the second part of the manga in which after naruto failes at bringing sasuke back from the hands of orochimaru, he goes with jariya (hope i spelled that right) to train for a couple of years, when he returns, its naruto shipudden.
