I have at least one that comes to my mind immediately that I have to share.
Millennium Actress is under Spirited Away's shadow. Spirited Away is one of the most celebrated anime movies of all time (especialy over hear) whereas Millennium Actress is all but unheard of.
While they aren't too similar, both movies came out in 2001, and Spirited Away's success basically drowned out Millennium Actress. Even though they came out in the same year, Millennium actually took home many, many awards. It actually shared Grand Prize with Spirited Away in the Japan Agency of Cultural Affairs Media Arts Festival.
It's a movie that could share Grand Prize with Spirited Away- yet hardly anyone has heard of it...
I actually think Millennium Actress is a better movies than Spirited Away. Millennium Actress is probably one of the best romantic tragdeties in all of anime- but there is also plenty humor and action to make this movie simply beautiful.
It makes me a sad panda to know that so few people have ever heard of this show...
