A very impressive list i might say there are two i have seen and can recommend.
The first is called star ocean EX and is based off of a PlayStation game. It has an interesting plot involving strange planets, monsters, and magic.
The second is Scrapped princess and is about a girl who was supposed to doom the world and was supposedly killed at birth but it turns out the officer ordered to do so had too much of a heart to kill a newborn. The anime quickly goes from a homely serene life to an action filled adventure with magic, dragons, and even the supposed God of there world.
Both of these animes are around 25 ep but are still very good and exciting.

D. Grey-man is pretty good, though my grandpa enjoyed DBZ, eyeshield 21. He liked the sports anime the best.
