and the relics? maybe it had something to do with their identity and how geass comes about..

There is no certain deal about the geass. However, the more you used it the less control you have its power. Proven when Lelouch unintentionally used her geass on Euphemia. Also, it could cause the geass' user to lose his sanity just like what happen to Mao.
I don't know about your second question though, but I do have an idea that they keep holy relics from the tribe C.C. belong in.
