What was that mecha anime?!

Question: I have very vague memories of a old mecha anime I used to watch, would anyone remember the title? Here are some concepts I remember:
The main char was a boy from earth who made a robot out of clay and put some beads round it and it came to life in a 'other world'
The robot was sentient cos it was inhabitated by a dragon spirit?
He had to save the other world from some big bad evil guy by going up through the levels of a huge mountain which had a rainbow around it indicating his progress.
He had a motley crew with him, which included a fat guy who dual wielded his robot, a biredman who was a pirate of sorts? and a little girl who had her own unpredictable robot. He also had a rival who had a robot that transformed into a flying cheetah? I also think clearing the 'stages' of the mountain meant freeing the dragon spirits.
Anyone have a clue as to what the title is?

Well, finally after an exhausted search and then decided to search using four simple words ("robot", "clay", "comedy", "anime"), I finally got... "Wataru".

The originial anime TV series ("Mashin Eiyūden Wataru" / "Legend of the Machine Demons and the Hero Wataru") featured:

- A boy named Wataru Ikusabe, he's a 9 years old samurai, he is able "to transform a clay sculpture into a somewhat autonomous (small) Super Robot"

- A girl named Himiko Shinobibe, she's a ninja.

- There's a big guy, a birdman, and of course a blond rival.

- The story is comedic in nature and a parody of fantasy RPGs, featuring super robots

- It aired in japan at 1988-1989.

Its sequels stories might be whay you're looking, Wataru is older looking on these stories.

Its latest TV series is "Chou Mashin Eiyūden Wataru", aired in 1997-1998.
