Well, he has been known to fly at the speed of light, which is impossible for matter according to the theory of relativity because it would require an infinite amount of energy, which superman (nor the entire universe) does not have. So my theory is that when he flies, he bends space time around him, enabling him bypass the constraints of physical laws, which is actually mathematically possible according to a large number of theoretical physicists... (sorry to get all turbo-nerd on you)

A giant burrito? Maybe a garlic and onion quesadilla? If you ever wondered why the show isn't on tv anymore; it's because he wouldn't pass the emissions tests in CA.
I think it's some sort of limited telekinisis type ability.. he just wills himself to fly and he flies.. there isn't any sort of jet propulsion because if there was, he'd burn the ground everytime he took off..
There have been several explanations - not flying, just jumping (gravity or Krypton much greater than earth's); he can fly, because of earth's yellow sun (huh?); flying is based on the magnetic content of his body and the Earth's polarity, so he can push himself away and pull himself toward it; etc.
I suppose each writer can make up his own "reality" for Superman's powers.
I always thought that maybe his body had some type of magnetic or gravitational pull towards the sun and therefore, he can control that at will allowing him to fly. Maybe his body has some type of extra equilibrium that controls this without him knowing it....I dunno...they never really explained it in the comics..
