Watch Hearts of Darkness. The sacrifice was going to happen anyway, they just included it in the film. Yes it was real. The extras were celebrating a festival. It was Coppola's wife who ran to get him when she saw it going on.

The film was so stressful for Martin Sheen he had a heart attack. The drunk scene at the beginning is not acting.

What did you expect, a happy ending where they all sing and dance? It's supposed to haunt you.

The whole movie is haunting, imho. The cow just adds to it.

I had a harder time with the beheading of the chef guy and all the bodies strung up in the trees.

LOL, that's the worst part for you?

I wondered if that was real. After a little research, the balance of probability is that it was.

I just hope they ate it. If you have to kill something, it should be for food.

personally i dont think it was unnecessary. it just added to the atmosphere and mood they were trying to create. remember it was a ceremonial killing by native peoples and not meant to be senseless act of violence but i can see why some wouldnt like it.
the carabao (water buffalo) was real by the way.dont think that would have been included if filmed today.

yes i think so the sacrifice of the cow was synonymous with the military that do our dirty business and then become corrupted by the things they experience
