Actually, I read in an interview somewhere that they do understand Stewie, but for the most part they choose to ignore him, seeing him as just acting like a baby so they don't pay attention to him.

That's what I don't get. They seem to sometimes. I know they understand when the dog talks which is just weird.
They can understand him, they just dont answer him.
