Should i buy the individual books or Absolute Editions of the Sandman comic?!

Question: I am planning on buying the complete series, but im confused on which one i should buy.

I know i can buy the individual collection books (Preludes & Nocturnes, The Doll's House, so-on), and they would be cheaper, but i heard they were in black and white????

BUT

The Absolute Editions of it look great, and I KNOW they are in color (which i want), but the books are huge from the looks of it (too big to carry around casually).

They both come in hardback (which i want), so can someone tell me the pro's and con's of each collection?

It would be much appriciated!

thanks!

ALL Sandman comics are in color, in every edition.

I've owned all three formats - the original issues of the series, the trade paperbacks, and the two Absolutes they've released to date (I sold the tpbs once I had the absolutes). What might have made you think the normal tpbs were in black and white is hearing that the Absolute edition RECOLORED the first 20 issues or so. The original comics and the trades were in color, but the colors were kind of dark. For the Absolute edition, they went back and redid all the colors, so it looks much, much better. But the trades are not black and white.

The did make hardcovers of the smaller tpbs, but they're not really worth it since they're so much more expensive.

I really like the Absolutes - they're gorgeous, the re-coloring looks a lot better, it's 3 inches taller than the normal editions so the artwork is nice and big and luscious, and there's a ton of special features. Each Absolute volume reprints about as many issues as three softcovers, so take that into account when weighing which way you want to go. But you're completely right about them being too big to carry around anywhere. You would only want to read these in your home, since they're a good 10 pounds each. I guess it just depends if PORTABILITY is major factor in buying for you. How often do you read at home, and how often do you take books out to read elsewhere is what you need to ask yourself. And even if you do read out alot, is only being able to (conveniently) read these in your home that big of an issue?

The individual collection books are most definitely in color - I own the first six from way back when I got into the series when it was still current. (Started collecting individual issues somewhere in the Brief Lives storyline, so this would be about 1992.) Beyond that I can't really tell you the difference between the two editions. Good luck!
