How does your family treat your anime/manga addiction?!
Question: My sister riducules me for downloading Japanese music, saying that it's "strange, creepy, and weird." She thinks that my watching anime and reading manga is really weird and stupid too. Technically, though, it's her fault I got into anime. She went away for a summer, there was a tv in our room with some late-night anime on, and yeah... But she always wonders "where she went wrong" with me, and thinks of what she can do to get me to stop liking anime. My taste in music isn't that grand, and neither is hers, but she thinks it's okay to judge my music but it's not okay for me to judge hers. She riducules everything about anime and purposely mispronouces it just to bug me. My brother does the same but isn't anywhere near as bad. Now, moving onto my second question (see the first one above in the bold print): what should I do to exact sweet revenge or at least do something to get her to leave me alone? She despises anything anime, is 18, and annoys people for her own sadistic pleasure. Keh.

Gosh... I feel so identified with you... I have to older sisters... The oldest think that Anime is for losers (she doesn't say it, but it's so freaking obvious), so when I mention that I'd love a Kon or a Kirara puppet she start saying that I shouldn't waste my money on that... Also, she is so into the stereotype that Anime fans are creeps that only are in front of computers with no social life and living in a world of fantasies... so when she hears that in going out with some Anime fan friends, she starts freaking out saying that "those people" are this and that... and that they probably will take me to the path of drugs... It really bothers me; but I sort of deal with it... What still surprises me is that she sort of thinks she has to "protect" me... don't get me wrong, I appreciate that... but, not even my parents are so obsesive with that... And besides I'm 20... so I'm not a kid... Geez... Sometimes it really annoys me... I don't want to fight with her 'cus she's my sister and I love her... but, she can seriously be annoying... and I really hate when she treats me like I'm a 5 year-old kid... Dear gosh... I'M 20!!!!! It's frustrating... I may not have all the experience in the world but I'm not a kid... I'M AN ADULT!!!!
My other sister is less annyoing... But, she like to bother me just like yours... she also purposely mispronouces every word or character name just to annoying me (saying Inuchacha instead of Inuyasha; Saskee instead of Sasuke; Fresita (Little Strawberry in Spanish) instead of Ichigo; and so on)... and says that they talk weird... and that Japanese people only say "shitte"... At first she started annoying saying that J-music was lame; and no way she would listen to it... but, one day she told me to listen this "amazing" song "Fly to the Moon" by Diana Kroll... and I told that yeah, I have listened it... that it was Neon Genesis Evangelion ending theme... she totally freaked out... and starting saying that it just wasn't possible that a good song like that could be a part of any Anime... Oh, well... She learned to live with it... I guess... Anyway; she's always bothered me mispronuncing things... but, I talk about Anime with her... and sometimes she watches it with me... so I don't really mind her annoyingness...
My parents... well... When one of the things I remember very fondly is the fact that when I was 12 my dad used to watched DBZ (maybe 2 episodes a week) with... I guess, trying to spend more time or something... So they are OK with that... I sometimes annoying my mother to watch Naruto with me; and talk to them about that... so, they are cool with Anime...
And, because of thanks to Anime I've started to learn Japanese, my dad buys the CDs without objection...
And; I wouldn't do (I don't, actually) anything if I were you... Older siblings have for a job to annoying the youngest... so I feel your pain; but even if she wouldn't annoyed you with Anime related things... she would annoyed you with other things... so, it doesn't really make a difference... she still would try to bug you...
nothing really other then tell me to get of the computer and do my homework and tell me that anime is a waste of time

I was playing Guitar Hero with my mom in the room and I said "OMG NARUTO IS ON!!!" And all she said was "What the hell is Naruto?" and looked at me like this. =_=
So, I turned it on and she said, "... no wonder you're so insane..." and she leaves. XD
They hate it! *sob* They're like "hey let's all watch I Love Lucy while eating popcorn and making fun of Nooreetoo and Fawll Medal Aylchemist with that weird short girl with gloves and a red cloak" they hate it so much now I'm on damned anime arrest! I can't watch anime for the rest of this damned month. Yes, that is how they treat my anime addiction. They don't even pronounce it correctly! They're torturing me!
No one knows about it and I don't have any siblings so it's just my secret hobby something no one knows about well except my friends.
my sis and i are both into anime. my 'rents don't really care if we read them or not. my friends make fun of it if someone brings it up but it's hardly ever brought up. it stinks that ur sis is like that. srry. if she wont listen to u asking her to stop, then find something u think is weird about her and constantly bug her w/ that until she calls a truce. i mean, what are sisters for if not to bother eachother?!

Anime is prety cool but I don't watch it much. I like pop culture stuff like Beavis and Butthead and Family Guy. I think that a lot of Anime would wear me out. I think nothing beats classic Disney movies. Tell think your sister should know that everybody deserves to have their own taste. If you like Anime and she likes Disney you should get her to watch Princess Mononoke.

well my parents think its stupid and at times they tell me to get off the computer already. before i started watching anime i thought it was stupid but know i love it i also like Japaneses music
also about a year ago when i was sleeping at my friend's house i was watching naruto on cartoon network and then my friend comes and says "eww what are you watching, isn't that for boys" and im like no also at the time she didn't even know what anime is know she thinks its weird that i always listen to Japaneses music and stuff like that but im still friends with her..lol

My brother used to support anime and manga too but my parents quickly got that out of his system and is now sorta like your sister… annoying.
Anyway, I live with it and keep it at a low profile… that’s why I’ve recently have been limited to coming on Y!A C+A section *cry*. I used to come here everyday sadly I can’t.
Okay, about your sister… she defiantly sounds like a pain in the neck! Find something that she loves and criticize her on that. 18 huh? Hmmm… she got any boyfriends? That’s usually a good target… embarrass her or something. Teens get too emotional sometimes lol. I always say things like you shouldn’t get back at people and how things like that are bad but I understand your situation.

Good Question. Both of my brothers thinks I'm too addicted to it...actually my whole family thinks I'm obsessed and addicted to it. though they give me Manga and Animes for Christmas or Birthday presents sometimes....
I suppose you can't avoid her if you live in the same house. I'd suggest just keeping the volume down on your tv if she's around so it won't bother her too much. And be sure you have done all your chores before you get to your hobbies, so she can't throw that in your face. Try getting into other stuff too, there just might something else out there that would interest you and make you a better, well-rounded person. I do agree Japanese culture is quite interesting, but there are other things to learn about. Good luck!
They don't really care all that much,or pretty much know about it lol. They usually yell at me to get off the computer and do my homework.
Ya,I told my parents about Naruto,and they were pretty much what the hell,Naruto?So,I didn't really said anything and just said its a tv show at the time. Then they started trying to say,Naruto and kept getting it wrong and it gets really annoying lol.

Yeah my little sister is the same, she doesn't do it on purpose though and not vindictively she just has trouble with pronunciation I think (we have New York accents its tough!). My husband has made up names for the characters whose names he can't pronounce some of them are really strange, but hes actually starting to enjoy it I think. My son is to cute, I'm teaching him Japanese so he can say the names of characters better then his dad!
When I lived with my family they thought it was weird but I never really cared what they thought, thats why you have the internet to talk to other people who like right?

My parents HATE anime with a PASSION. But, my brother is such a huge fan, and respectable enough that he can manipulate them into letting him read manga and watch anime. So, I am lucky enough to get his hand-me-down manga volumes, and to watch anime whenever he does.
Revenge, eh? I'll get back to you on that....... *evil thoughts*

Most of my family doesn't care for it that much, but sometimes they actually seem to be interested in it... O.o One time, my sister asked me to draw her in Mermaid Melody style. xD ...Except they all HATE Pokemon... but then again, I do too. ^^; I just used to watch it when I was younger.

My older brother and younger sister both think it's awesome. My dad doesn't really care-- he does give me his credit card so I can buy mangas online (We don't have a Barnes & Nobel in my town) My mom thinks that my love for anime is dumb, she makes fun of the Japanese language, and the shows I watch. Hates when I watch anime on the computer for extended periods of time, ect... But my family isn't really the problem, Its the people I know at school. Theres only one other student at my school who loves anime, and we get along really well. The rest of the students tease my sister and I a lot... We say one Japanese word, and there's a rumor going around that we speak Japanese fluently, our dad is from Japan, ect. It's tiresome.
My older brother loves DBZ, my twin and I love One Piece, my little sister loves Naruto, and my little brother loves Pokemon.
As for revenge... I'd say you should start making fun of her favorite shows. For example, if its a Soap Opera, every time she watches start saying things like "Mike has amenesia! Kate is pregnant with his baby! Kate was hit by a car! Bob had a heart attack! *Gasp* Mike is Jims REAL father!" ect...
My family and friends don't really get it. I've told then over and over what it is and every Christmas and Birthday I've asked for anime or a gift certificate to somewhere I can get anime, but it never happens. :( The only person who understands somewhat is my boyfriend because he also likes anime. He not as into it as me though, he likes the online games more. :) We share a common interest in some animes. :) He basically likes all the anime on my top list which is cool. :)

well my cousin got me in 2 anime/manga and i found out about naruto and when i saw the first episode in 2005 i was in love right from the beginning
Wow, after hearing this, I feel really lucky. My family doesn't really care. They know I like it and they're cool with it. My sister doesn't care for it but doesn't judge me about it. My brother has watched some stuff like FMA and thinks is cool. And my mom is the best. She has seen some stuff with me too and has even made a couple of my cosplays, I think she's just happy I'm not doing drugs or something illegal....wait...does downloading count? haha.

My brother has threatened to burn all of my manga. Consistently calls the Japanese music that I listen to "foreign bullsh*t". Though he has been more ignnoring the fact. My mother makes fun of it and tells me I need to find something else. My father seems to be okay with it, if a little confused. I think he's just happy that I joined anime club at my school, so I have to get out of the house and be with people. My sister makes fun of it sometimes, but nothing much. Though she will call it cartoon porn around my family (extended family as well).
As for revenge; consantly make fun of what she likes. Any chance you get play japanese music, watch anime, read manga around her. Start talking about a series and act like you really want her to get into too.
