It wasn't revealed in the anime -- however it was in the manga, the "How to Read" chapter.
Um.. if you're wondering why his name doesn't sound like a normal Japanese name -- it's because he was an orphan who lived in the Wammy's House in Winchester, England...

L Lawliet is his name. However his initial L, which is his first name, hasn't been revealed.

In Japan a 13 volume in the manga as released (its extras and interviews) and in their theirs a envolope with a card with L's name on it. So L'S NAME IS LAWLIET
