Edit: Oh, and by greatest anime of all time, I'm talking about anime for a more mature audience. If you love fightn' and beatn' em up anime like Naruto or Bleach, then this is on a completely different level.
Its beauty is it's realism and political, societal, and philosifical themes that it deals with expertely.

Cleverly questions life (why we live it, what's our goal?, etc), depicts how everyday (well not so everyday, as they're in space) people can be living in the future, and weaves it all together.
It's message will hit much closer to home once you're older (or more mature, as not everyone "matures when they age"), have a job, have a family, thinking about your future, etc.
Unlike your "out of the ordinary" Bleach, Naruto, DBZ, etc. Like sure that might happen and the audience can relate & get attached (if you've got superpowers!).
