Well, Itachi is one of my favorite characters, but I really think he should have came up with a better reason for doing it. I mean if they all abused him then it would make more sense! But, I think he might be just a little teeny bitty bit crazy (:
i dont know why he killed his clan. (probably to test his strength) but i do know why he kept sasuke alive...he explains it in one of the most recent chapters of the manga...its because due to using the mangekyou sharingan his eyes became really weak .. and eventually he was going to become blind....so he lets sasuke live only to take his eyes for his own use so that he would not become blind

Itachi is the coolest.
He says himself that he did it to test his strength. He is crazy, and he killed his best friend just to get the mangekyo sharingan, so i must say that i believe his reason is true.
Uhm, because he just wanted to know how strong he had become. And he only let his lil brother Sasuke live in order to defeat/kill him someday. What a psycho! Because of this traumatizing incident, Sasuke became what/who he is now. So cold and selfish.

umm...well i asked this question before and naruto uzumaki told me that he wanted to test how strong he was. He also wanted to see if sasuke could kill him, he wanted to see him suffer. thats why he killed his clan

This is a link that should answer your question. It is on the site leafninja.com. Itachi was dissatisfied with his clan and thought they weren't using their powers as they were capable of doing. He killed them all (and let Sasuke live) because he thought it would anger Sasuke so much that this would drive him (Sasuke) to obtain the Mangekyou Sharingan. To gain this, Itachi thought you had to kill your closest friend, and so he killed Shisui.
To see how powerfull he is. He told this himself to Sasuken when he asked him.
itachi is the brother of sasuke...he even taught sasuke to kill his parents...well itachi is not a good example...
he even said to sasuke that he must kill his friend naruto...

I think it was because everyone wanted something different from him. I think it was because everyone was just using him like a tool. I mean he was just a kid and they took his childhood from him. They made him grow up so fast. His father didn't really care about him, but about how powerful he can be. I think he left Sasuke alive because he was the only one who didn't view him as THE GENIUS OF THE UCHIHA CLAN, he saw him as his older brother. When Itachi fell from glory it was then that his father finally began acknowledge Sasuke. Then he tells Sasuke to hate him so that he will become stronger an one day see that maybe it wasn't he who was at fault but the entire clan.
MADARA MADE HIM DO IT!!! IT WAS MADARA, MADARA, MADARA!!!!!!!!!! *points at madara uchiha and blaming him* *itachi keeps him back from tryin to hurt me* (yeah! go itachi^^)
