Why do 50% of all anime fans think Avatar is anime!! ARGH!!?!

I know! It isn't but so many people think it is and I'm tired of them listing it when you ask what anime could I watch!! Avatar sucks! Since when does ang have hair thats messed up! And it is soooo not anime!
I don't,but it annoy me too. I mean yes it may look like it has anime style to it,but it is an American cartoon,it really is just like another cartoon. Actually if anything it is just a copy of great animes out there.

i agree, besides even though they use anime visuals they dont really look anime, the character designs are not stylized, they're so...how should i put this?....American, like the characters look like anime versions of cartoon characters.
well, it's done in the style, so maybe that led some people to believe that it is.
No way is it anime or american anime (no such thing) it is just a cartoon with better graphics then most cartoons. I am not saying it good or nothing, because it is not. I like your name for it.

i agree...i like avatar, but i still see it kinda trying to pretend to be anime...but its not...so i wood be on the 50% that doesnt say its anime....although, anime is basically just animation, so...
Most Americans Believe Avatar is an Anime because of the way it looks. The artwork is heavily anime influenced and Asian influenced. The reason it isn't an anime is because, well you said it, its made in America. I prefer to call it an American Alternative cartoon. Its an American cartoon, but it isnt a "traditional" cartoon like Scooby Doo, of the Flintstones. As far as not liking it, Its personal preference. I happen to love the show's story line and martial arts sequences (Because its a Nick toon, its a little kiddy, but I dont mind.) Honestly not to bash Naruto, but I would say its way too over rated. Dont get me wrong its a good show, just not worth all of the Hype. If you want to watch a really good anime, watch outlaw star, or Cowboy Bebop, or Samurai Champloo.

"American Anime"? It's not even considered an anime! It was made in California in the US. That's nowhere close to Japan! So, it's a cartoon, not an anime. It has to be made in Japan to be called an anime. I see how people got it mixed up, but seriously, they should realize that it was made in the USA. Geez. Avatar is awful!
Japanese use the term "anime" for any cartoon, regardless of where it originated. Only pretentious Americans insist that "anime" means Japanese cartoons exclusively and usually do so under the pretention that Japanese cartoons are somehow superior to any other form of graphic art. "Nippon anime" would clearly indicate that a particular cartoon is indeed a Japanese cartoon.

Avatar is not anime you are correct. The people who think that it is anime are obviously not true anime fans at all. The may have copied the anime drawing style with the eyes and the way the graphics look but thats about it. American anime? who ever thinks that is stupid.....! Anime is something that the Japaneses made and it will always be the drawing style of the japanese not any one else.

Thank you for posting this! I knew Avatar wasn't an anime, but my idiotic ex friend (who thinks she knows everything just because she gets good grades) is always telling me it is. yeah right, thats bull s***! i like avatar but it is NOT japanese, nor is it anime. finally someone realizes this.
I don't think of Avatar as an anime (though I did slip that one time and call a video of it an AMV...and I apologize!). It does annoy me a bit when people say this it's an anime, especially when my sister says it, because she says it so mockingly. If it's made in America, it's first language is English, then hell, it must be made in America! Alas, many people think that just because it has anime influences (even though in the show it leans more heavily to the Chinese culture), it's automatically anime and it was made in Japan. But I don't let that stop me from absolutely loving it...but I still don't love it as much as Fullmetal Alchemist. ^_^

I consider Avatar to be a "Wanna-be Anime". I don't know where people are getting the idea of "American Anime"; you're right, there is no such thing. But I think people classify Avatar as an "American Anime" because there's just no other name for it. It's not a cartoon, because the style resembles that of normal anime, but it's not made in Japan, so it can't be called anime. So yeah, in my opinion, it's a Wanna-be.

Avatar is not considered an anime because of its American origin; one review has commented that "Avatar blurs the line between anime and (US) domestic cartoons until it becomes irrelevant." In addition, Avatar has many features of anime such as having a different color palette from other animated shows.
Also, it was insipired somewhat by an Anime:
