Recommend graphic novels?!

Question: I'm a 16 year old female. I've never even looked through a graphic novel before so I have no idea where to start but I'd really like to check some out. Can anyone recommend some good ones to start with?

I know I'm a girl but I don't want anything too...girly. If girly graphic novels even exist haha.

If you don't like manga, like me, I would go this route.

-Watchmen
-The Dark Knight Returns
-The Long Halloween
-Superman:Red Son
-V for Vendetta

Those are just a few of my favorites.

I don't read traditional graphic novels, but I read manga (graphic novels that the Japanese make.) You know, the ones that are backwards? You have to read them from right to left and the text right to left, too. But you'll get used to it. Anyway, you should read:

-Naruto
-Bleach
-InuYasha
-Fullmetal Alchemist
-Death Note

...and I'll come back when I have more suggestions!! Bye!!

Hope this helps.

I recommend these graphic novels:
True Tears
Clannad
Air TV
Myself ; Yourself
H2O ~Footprints in the Sand~
ef - a tale of memories
Kanon

Do you mean these kinds?

if you like magical girls kind of stuff, read Tokyo Mew Mew, Sailor Moon, or Cardcaptor Sakura
if you don't mind that much violence or blood in mangas, then read Bleach, Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, or maybe even Chrono Crusade
if you like simple (kind of) love stories, read Love Hina or Chobits
just simple mangas (or simplier than others) read XXXHolic or Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles
if you want a suspense thriller with a lot of talking and less (physical) violence then read DeathNote
you can read all of these at www.mangafox.com

go with remymort's line of thinking if you could be into graphic novels at least read the good stuff, marvels is good , kingdom come, son of the demon, sin city, 300

Stardust by Neil Gaiman is good.
Elfquest by Wendy & Richard Pini.

Along with remymort and scott2ann suggestions, I also suggest graphic novels written by neil gaiman or alan moore. There is also a great graphic novel called ghost world. The main characters are girls, but it's certainly not girly.

A lot of good suggestions posted by other people.

Some graphic novels are
The Golden Age by DC
Pride of Baghdad by Vertigo (DC)

I'm drawing a blank on other graphic novels. If you don't mind trades of ongoing series, you may like
.
Runaways by Marvel

or Invincible by Image (you can read the first issue online)
