Question: Does anyone know the name of a 1980s anime which is very similar to the power rangers in that the characters are inside vessels that come together to create a larger craft that looks like a robot. I believe it takes place in space.

Voltron - I remember that show being on Cartoon Network when they used to play old shows. It was produced by Bandai and Toei Animation.
Voltron it's a robot created by combining 5 robots in a shape of a lion together to form A robot to fight evil. It was created in anime style in the 1980's then later it was made in 3d cgi animation.
Sounds like Voltron to me.
