Most anime are based on manga, but some manga are based on anime.
manga is the printed comic book with Japanese signature style while anime is the 2-D animation movie with that Japanese signature style too.
So if you see Japanese cartoon art, if it's comic then it's manga and if it's movie then it's anime.

Well to start ya there is a different. The manga is pretty much a Japanese comic book. The manga has the original plot and story. The manga is usually ahead of the anime and usually has more information that the anime doesn't have or doesn't show.
The anime is the manga,but just put into motion. Its what the manga has,but made into an episodes,with possible some information left out. The anime is colored in unlike the manga which is black and white,and the anime has music and sound effects as well as voices for the characters.
So,the are different in how they are show,but they are the same in that they pretty much have the same plot,with sometimes somethings are different between the anime and the manga.
the manga is just like a comic book but of course it's way better than any normal comic book!

anime is Japanese and so is the manga, the manga comes in black and white and it's read from right to left, not from left to right! that's the difference!

Heres an easy way of how to distinguish:
Anime-Animation-TV shows.
Manga-Book.
Sometimes in manga they will have a few extra characters or events that will happen.
Anime they might add or take out things that happen in the manga.
As people have clearly said, manga is a comic book and anime is essentially the animated version of that book or at least with that style.
To remember, anime sounds like the beginning of animation and manga translated into Japanese literally means 'comic' =)
