NANA is one of my favorite, if not my favorite, shoujos. Ai Yazawa's art style and storytelling is both refreshing and unique in the shoujo genre.
It's been said, but NANA mainly revolves around two seemingly opposite female characters that share the name Nana. The manga is about how they meet, and how their lives become intertwined as they seek out their dreams, loves, and happiness in Tokyo. The story is told in a flashback mode with little thoughts by both Nanas attached at the end of each chapter (most of them from Nana K aka Hachi). Touching, sweet, moving, and stylish, NANA is an enthralling read for any shoujo fans.
I can understand why some people may dislike it because it does have a certain amount of melodrama, and the heroines aren't your conventional, chaste, happy, fortunate girls. They're young women in their early 20s just trying to find their way in life. Really, you should just read and find out for yourself.
If, by the way, you do end up liking NANA, I would recommend similar popular work by her:
Paradise Kiss - 5 volumes - Yet another stylish manga by Yazawa, where the main character, Yukari/Carolina gets thrown in the the world of fashion when she's spotted on the streets by a strange looking boy. A great read, *** out of 4 stars.
Similarly, Kagen no Tsuki (Last Quarter), and Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai are also by Yazawa-san.
I've read a lot of shoujo mangas and since I'm not sure as to what you've read and what type of taste you have, I can suggest some of my favorites (stars denote my personal rating):
Ouran High School Host Club by Bisco Hatori - A hilarious reverse harem revolving around the deadpan Haruhi when she finds herself in the debt of the very popular Host Club. ***
Vampire Knight by Matsuri Hino - Yuuki is a guardian at Cross Academy where she helps keep the day students from finding out that the night class students aren't what - who they seem. Great art and a very mysterious storyline so far. ***
Skip Beat! by Yoshiki Nakamura ***
Tokyo Crazy Paradise by Yoshiki Nakamura *** - anything by Nakamura is absolutely hilarious but well told as well. Skip Beat! is probably her most popular work right now, but go back and give this title a chance if you liked Skip Beat!
Kare First Love by Kaho Miyasaka *** - A nice and sweet 10 volume story about how nice nerdy girl meets semi-bad boy Aoi Kiyara.
Midnight Secretary by Tomu Ohmi if you like vampire stories. (Warning: the story is slightly smutty) **1/2
Marmalade Boy by Wataru Yoshizumi **1/2
Merupuri also by Matsuri Hino **1/2
Hana-Kimi by Hasaya Nakajo ***- Classic gender bender
Cherry Juice by Haruka Fukushima **1/2
Beauty Pop by Arai Kyouko **
Sand Chronicles/Sunadokei by Hinako Ashihara ***
Hot Gimmick by Miki Aihara ** - Only if you're able to stand spineless heroines.
Nana is really good.it's about 2 girls who are both called nana and how they meet and deal with life's problems.the thing is that they are both opposites.
not really i tryed reading it and watching the anime and its so slow and dosent really grasp your attention but different people like different things....><

Well i have read NANA and i love it, very sad at times but then again it is also very exciting and dramatic. It is about two girls named Nana and one wishes to become a famous singer and the other wishes for love and a happy life but when their dreams come true it isnt what they expected at all. You should really try and read a couple chapters, it is a bit slow in the begining but it gets so much better after that.
