When did you actually know what anime was?!

Question: The reason why I ask this is because I didn't actually know what anime was and where it came from wasn't until I first watched Yu-Gi-Oh, like 6 years ago.

It's sad, I actually thought it was american made. -.-"

actually just about half a year ago. i used to watch pokemon and sailor moon (i think????) all the time and i had nooo idea what it was. and i saw a little bit of naruto too. the episode i saw was the one where naruto thinks haku is a girl lol. it sucks i could have been watching naruto and other anime all this time if i was smart enough then to get into it. i thought were just more cartoons, but cooler. and i even had the pokemon trading cards that had japanese on them and my japanese cousin (OMG I HAVE A JAPANESE COUSIN I JUST REMEMBERED THAT!!!!! SWEEEET...she married my cousin...what a shame i never see them) translated for us. and it didnt really register through my mind it was japanese. actually, it might have. im not sure. you know its so weird i cant remember any details about anything in my life from when i was like under 8. at all. i cant remember the vacations ive been on, my favorite shows, my old best friends, anything! its like i have long-term memory loss, and im only 13! i need to keep a diary or something!!!! you know i think i watched dragon ball z too but im not sure...whenever i see sailor moon or dragon ball z it seems like ive watched it before. i think i got sailor moon tapes from blockbuster? were there even sailor moon tapes at blockbuster? i havent even seen sailor moon in forever i dont even know what its about except its about like magical girls or something??? i think they could fly? but i only got into anime and actually figured out what it is, the history, where it came from, etc. just about half a year ago, like a said. what a waste huh? i mean i watched anime but i didnt get that special anime experience that you get when you realize its not just some american-made cartoon and its waaaay better! even though i forgot a lot from when i was little, i do know i was in love with pokemon XD. i used to have a book of all these rare pokemon trading cards that my brother put together and then gave to me when he started saying it was for little kids. i said that too very soon after that because back then i just copied whatever my brother did because i thought he was the coolest person in the world. anyway, i think i sold it at a garage sale for like ten dollars (i feel really shitty about that now) but at least i still have my little pikachu plushie and pikachu purse and crappy pokemon game boy and nintendo game along with some little keychains and things like that to bring back the good memories. lol i wrote too much. i guess thats what happens when you are just sooo bored

when some girl across from me drew a very bizzare looking human with a very large sword....in other words....8th grade

1993......i had a sensei who taught me a lot...he happened to have a japanese friend

I knew by the time I was five. You see, my brother always had an obsession for it, and he taught me about it. He never let me watch the ones he would watch, and I really don't remember what ones they were, they were obscure, but he turned on Sailor Moon and explained to me that it was anime for kids my age.

I didn't find out what anime was until I got the internet when I was eleven. Unfortunately I also found out what hentai and yaoi were bleh.

haha
well i guess i started with sailor moon when i was 4
and then stuff like yu gi oh + tokyo mew mew
stuff on 4kids.
and then i found out that there was a magical land out next to china called japan that made everything in 7th grade
and started watching naruto
i think ive watched/read a whole lot more after that
:]

once I saw Macross/Robotech on TV when I was 6 I saw a commercial for it.

When i was 6!

I would say it was about 7 years ago. I watched anime sense I was 4, but I didn't know that they were from Japan. I found out after I got into the Yu-Gi-Oh card game. I first found them in Japanese so I found out they were Japanese not american made. It wasn't till adult swim did I really get into anime, I can't really remenber when that started(old days when they were only on on the week days and had pics of old people swiming) and when I got internet two years ago did I know everything and det addicted. haha

I'm 15 years old now so...when I was 4 years old.
My first anime was Georgie.
It was pretty old >.< to say how it was drawn, haha!
And during kindergarden, my mom bought me this Sailormoon manga, even if I couldn't understand anything. ;P
I never thought that it was American made.

ha im just like u i watched yu gi oh and pokemon but i never even gave a thought to whereit came from then like 2yrs ago i watched naruto and i looked on the internet to watch more...and then the magical world of anime waz opened up 2 me*sniff* lol

same happened with me i thought the way they made dragon ball z and pokemon was just a coincidence i thought that it was made in america and i only found out one time when i was reading a k-zone magazine in like primary school and i saw a lot of pics of my fav cartoons so i read the section entitled "ANIME" so i read on and noticed my fav shows actually were made in japan... ahh the good old nieve days not knowing much bout my fav cartoons

when pokemon first came out

I did not know it was referred to as anime until October the first 2005 (I remember that day because I was due for abdominal surgery and it was also , coincidentally , the title of a novel that I had read entitled " October The First Is Too Late " by Fred Hoyle who wrote science-fiction books . Excuse the digression from your question . )
Up until that time I thought it was correctly referred to as Japanimation . That is until I saw a single episode of Ghost in the Shell : Stand Alone Complex -- the series really put the hook into me ! I have become a big fan of the Ghost in the Shell series , films , manga , and prose books .
Only after reading and learning about both the series and the genre did I learn that it was properly referred to as Anime .
I have come to really enjoy some , but not all , anime !
:0)

Well my parents were always talking about how awfull japanese cartoons are, how much there's violence and etc. -_-' That started when I was about six and watched digimon, pokemon, DBZ and etc. But then I didn't know it was called anime! I really understood what anime is when I started watching naruto! That's awful isn't it? Living in obscurity for so long! -_-'

i frist knew when i watched kikis delivery service at like 8

Well abt in 2000 I started watching anime the first anime I watched was Naruto after a couple of days i found out it was Japanese anime made in the country of Japan.

it was 9th grade when you and gail told me about it.

Complete understanding?.. Hmm... I was 11yrs. old, I'm 20 now. I got hooked on Sailor Moon.. And it all followed from there.^-^ But I actually started watching anime at a way younger age, like 4-5 (old school anime rocks), though I didn't understand that it was called anime then.

like in july lol. i watched it all the time when i was younger, but never knew what it was! i thought it was american too >.< lol
