Well technically Naruto isn't.
The top most popular and well known animes are:
Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z
I mean come on! Who hasn't heard of those?
I love Naruto and I think it is awesome.
Yes Naruto is the most popular anime right now but more people know about Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z. If I went to school or in a crowd and asked someone about Naruto, most people would be like what are you talking about. If I asked them about Dragon Ball Z or Pokemon, more people would know what I'm talking about. Pokemon especially has made a lot of money with their cards (why do you think the cards are still coming out?). I bought so many as a kid......
If popularity means what most people like right now, then yes Naruto is the most popular anime.
If popularity means the most well known anime, then Dragon Ball Z or Pokemon would win.

I am a big fan of shojo. Naruto and Bleach are such great animes that they make me like shonen. ROCK ON!!!

I don't think anyone is really going to object to that... At least not in terms of current popularity.
However, if you want to ask if it's a GOOD anime, then you may find some diverging opinions. I'm of the opinion that it's not... (now you can thumbs me down).

At the moment yes, but that's just because it appeals to the larger audience of the ages 11-15. Some of the greatest animes are:

Cardcaptor Sakura- my fav
Death Note
Gundam Wing
There's others, but can't think of them right now. Naruto will never be the best anime out there because of those animes I listed. Naruto is too Kiddish. However, don't get me wrong I'm not saying the anime is bad or that I hate the anime. :)
ill say it is the most popular now, it's just awesome, but id say Dragonball is the greatest cuz it's the reason Naruto, Bleach and all those are being made.

But what I don't get is that the girls don't fight and let the guys take charge that realy pisses me off.
it is popular but i don't like it. tried watching it didn't work. as to why it's so popular, who knows? i thought it was stupid. there are so much better animes out there.

Naruto is definitely sweeping the nation at the moment. Everybody is totally in love with it. From small children to mothers and fathers. I can see why it's so popular. It's a generally uplifting show, mostly. It's got lots of plot twists, good, wholesome characters and even some freakin' psychos. There is humor, sadness, action, etc. and the human race thrives on this kind of entertainment. From fangirls drooling over "OMG lyke Sasuke's toetally hawt B0dY!!" to little boys dressing up like little ninjas.
I don't dislike the show, I actually love it... for a little bit. I only like it to episode One hundred 20-something, then it gets a little crazy. There are some wholesome lessons, but mostly it gets a bit deranged. It's supposed to be about Naruto... not Sasuke. I mostly like it for the information I can take and morph for crazy little fanfictions. Because i know some people who can write a kick *** plot with the characters and situations.
There is a lot of anime out there that doesn't get the proper attention, and then there are some that gets TOO much. But popular will be popular and, whether you like it or not, it will be popular. ^_^; Oh well, I just wish they would show me some Rurouni Kenshin or Outlaw Star again.

But it not only comes down to perspective, it comes down to classics. I mean NOW Naruto is popular, and it IS good, so I'm sure it will continue to be popular, but I mean what about the Dragon Ball series. I've LOVED that since I was in 1st grade when I saw it dubbed on Cartoon Network. It's classic. Almost everyone loves it. And Hayao Miyazaki's movies? They may be movies and not series', but EVERYYYYONE LOVES HIS WORK. Even people who for some crazy, crazy, reason HATE anime, LOVE his movies. Everybody who's mocked me (mostly my family and friends) for watching all the anime I do, LOVE Hayao Miyazaki's stuff.
Ahahaha yeah, Naruto is CRAZY popular, and it SHOULD be. Masashi Kishimoto is a genius. May the god(s) he believes in bless him in the best ways.
It's wonderful, amazing animation, wonderful storyline and cute couples (SASUNARU!!! I SWEAR! IT WILL HAPPEN!) I LOVE it and it keeps getting better and better as it goes on.

Naruto was the first (and only) fictional character to make it into the worlds top 100 most famous people, and he was like in the top 30 or something like that... my friend showed me something about it... can't remember the fine details....

it's not the most popular anime.
Gundam is up there. considering it was around before the 90s and is still makeing new shows. Naruto I can't see competeing with Gundam. may 2 or 3 of the gundam series but not Gundam has a whole.
Nartuo is up there with yugioh and pokemon in being one of the most popular and well know animes. but i think there are others that are more popular. but i can't see any of these being has popular has gundam.

I think Naruto is the most popular anime... It's still airing in Japan called Naruto Shippuuden... Uzumaki Naruto and his friends turned 15 years old...
Naruto Shippuuden arouses our curiosity in each episode. :)
