The young Uchiha Itachi was a skilled prodigy of Leaf Village. He graduated the Ninja Academy at age 7 and passed the Chuunin Exam at age 10. By age 13 Itachi had become a captain in the special ANBU squad. Itachi began to grow dissatisfied with his clan, feeling they were not using their gifts to their fullest extent. To test his potential he murdered his best friend Shisui. Doing so granted him the ability to use the Mangekyou Sharingan, a rare Sharingan form seen only in a few select clan members. To gain this form Itachi believed you had to kill your closest friend.
After murdering Shisui, Itachi turned against his clan. Itachi felt that Sasuke could also gain the Mangekyou, and felt that murdering the clan would drive Sasuke to his absolute limits, to one day gain the Mangekyou as well.
After wiping out his clan, Itachi fled Leaf and joined the Akatsuki Organization. Several years after leaving, Itachi returned with fellow member Hoshigaki Kisame. It was during this period it was revealed Akatsuki was seeking to obtain the Kyuubi demon from inside Naruto for their own ends. The two men began to do battle with Hidden Leaf ninja but when they began to be outnumbered, they fled.
A short time afterwards, Sasuke learned that Itachi had returned to the village. So he took off after Akatsuki's target, Naruto. Itachi and Kisame began to track and follow Naruto and Jiraiya who had left Leaf Village to find the Sannin Tsunade. While Naruto and Jiraiya had stopped to rest at a hotel, Itachi surprised and confronted Naruto. It was then Sasuke finally caught up and faced his brother for the first time in years.
Itachi easily defended himself against Sasuke and then forced him to relive the moment of his parents murder over and over again. Surprised that Sasuke had still been able to gain much power, Itachi dismissed his little brother’s growth. Jiraiya arrived and upon seeing that the situation was turning more dangerous, Kisame and Itachi decided to flee.
Over the next few years the duo would continue to help Akatsuki accomplish their goals. When members Deidara and Sasori captured Gaara, Kisame and Itachi volunteered to help delay the ninja who had been trailing them. Itachi once again had the opportunity to fight both Kakashi and Naruto. Itachi revealed some new skills during this battle, including the ability to cast a Genjutsu just by having his target look at his ring finger. Naruto fell victim to the attack but was helped by Sakura and elder Sand ninja Chiyo. The combined skills of Kakashi and Naruto were enough to get the better of Itachi, with Naruto striking him with Odama Rasengan. It was quickly revealed to merely be a sacrificial host body. Itachi himself was miles away acting through the sacrifice in exchange for some small measure of his chakra.
Their delay plan worked, and the group managed to extract Shukaku from Gaara before they could be stopped. Itachi and the group then took their leave. Itachi would continue to help Akatsuki and await the day when his younger brother would finally be powerful enough to live up to his high standards.

Itachi Uchiha was basiclly the cream of the crop in the Uchiha District, Konoha. He graduated the academy at 7, gained Sharingan at 8, and was a chuunin at 10. For mostly unkown reasons, Itachi destroyed the entire Uchiha Clan single handedly. He left only his little brother as a surviror. He is an S ranked criminal for that reason. His rank is atleast Chuunin, though has the abilities matched atleast to Jonin. First appeared in manga chapter 139, and in anime episode 80.

Itachi Uchiha
Itachi Uchiha (うちは イタチ, Uchiha Itachi) is a missing-nin from Konohagakure and is partnered with Kisame Hoshigaki. During his time in Konoha, Itachi's prodigious talents and rapid development into a skilled ninja earned great attention from his family, the Uchiha clan. He eventually began to train under Madara Uchiha in secret, murdering his best friend, Shisui Uchiha, to gain the Mangekyo Sharingan. He soon joined forces with Madara in the massacre of the Uchiha clan, sparing his younger brother, Sasuke Uchiha. Knowing that the blindness brought on by possessing the Mangekyo Sharingan could only be cured by taking the eyes of one's sibling, Itachi spared Sasuke so he could someday take his brother's eyes. Hoping that Sasuke might obtain his own Mangekyo Sharingan by then, Itachi encouraged his younger brother to live hating him and striving to avenge the clan. At some point in time Itachi joined Akatsuki. The timeline that has been given throughout the series coupled with his age suggests that he joined the organization prior to killing his clan.
Despite his status as a wanted criminal and murderer, Itachi does not display any open enjoyment in violence or combat. Itachi instead prefers to avoid battle or, if that is not possible, end it quickly while exerting as little effort as he can. When he does fight Itachi remains stationary, attacking only in defense and to otherwise avoid damage. He also studies an opponent's movements with his Sharingan eyes, using them to properly assess an opponent's actions and respond accordingly. With his Mangekyo Sharingan, Itachi can utilize attacks such as Tsukuyomi (月読, literally "Moon Reader"?), a genjutsu that can torture an opponent for what seems like days in a matter of moments. Itachi is also very adept with standard genjutsu, and can trap others within an illusion by merely pointing or looking at them, as well as turn their own genjutsu against them. He is also noted to be extremely fast with his techniques and movements, extending to his hand signs and weaponry as well.
