Question: do you necassarily need the byakugan to perform the gentle fist. i mean let's just say that some member of the family turned traitor or something and mapped out the chakra system for everyone to see. Then wouldn't any ninja do the gentle fist style. And if you don't need it, then wat makes the byakugan so special other than having x-ray vision/super range/and 360 degrees of vision (cuz those aren't extremely advantageous in battle)

Techniquely I suppose you don't need the Byakugan, but then you're treading into Ebisu's lesson to Naruto when learning to walk on water. Without the byakugan, you wouldn't know the exact spot on the opponent's chakra network to strike, and you'd waste more chakra 'blindly' striking for it. Besides without a percise location to aim for, you'd end up with attacks like Tsuande, concentrated chakra to the limb of contact, making for some serious damaging High speed Taijutsu like Rock Lee's and Gai Sensei. Or else you'd end up like Kabuto, and be able to do percision strikes to anatomial structures, which is still not the same as attacking the chakra network, but the effects would be similar. As for the x-ray/super range/ 360 degree vision, you are wrong, by being able to see through objects and at a greater range, Hyuuga members can spot their enemies before they themselves are spotted, and everyone knows being forwarned is to be forearmed. The 360 degree vision means you can't try sneeking up behind a Hyuuga shinobi without getting noticed sooner or later.
yes you do. the byakugan is a down ability. the gentle fist can be done by anyone in the hyuuga clan but only in the hyuuga clan. you dont see the uchihas using it :l

The user also has a field of vision, which is almost 360 degrees, minimizing the blind spot. In addition to this, the users range of vision can increase over a very long distance. After activating Byakugan, the user can perform Jyuuken (Gentle Fist). The level of Jyuuken performed depends on the ability of the user and the strength of the user's Byakugan.
