Plot Summary: Yagami Light is an ace student with great prospects, who's bored out of his mind. One day he finds the "Death Note": a notebook from the realm of the Death Gods, with the power to kill people in any way he desires. With the Death Note in hand, Light decides to create his perfect world, without crime or criminals. However, when criminals start dropping dead one by one, the authorites send the legendary detective L to track down the killer, and a battle of wits, deception and logic ensues... --> the summary throws people off... but it is a really awesome series ^^ it's not as "magical" as it seems... lol. plus, the art is top of the notch! (its only 1:20 mins long... you should watch it... i reccomend it ^^ you can get a SERIOUSLY better feel of the anime...plus, its an awesome song ^^)
**Unlike love hina and fruits basket, death note is not a comedy/romance anime.... its more of a seinen/mystery/horror (with a tinge of romance) but it is still an awesome series!! its sad, its suspensing... it has alot of funny and hilarious moments... you really fall in love with the characters.
i guarantee that there will be moments that will leave you hanging off your chair ^^ <3

Death Note is a REALLY good anime. If you are watching Love Hina and Fruits Basket, I'm not sure if you'll like it that much cause Death Note is more psychological and dark. But I have seen Love Hina and Death Note is one of my favorites so you might like it! Here are a couple of summaries:

its the best anime of Adult Swim in my opinion you can watch all the episodes that they have shown @ AdultSwim.com
Death Note is great! :) It's about a high school kid Light that finds a death notebook and if you wright someones name in it that person die, but he needs the name and to know the face of that person. He starts killing criminals and because of that a detective L starts pursuing him. It's really good, watch it. :)

Japanese mythology is, as might be expected, quite a bit different from western mythology. Gods of Death, and a land of the dead appear in a number of Japanese Anime series. In Dragonball Z, Goku and a number of others journey to the land of the dead, sometimes more than once. This bit of mythology is a relatively recent addition to the Japanese mythos.
Death Note is one adaptation of Japanese death mythology. As mentioned, Light Yagami (written Moon) is given a death note, a book in which he can write a person's true name while visualizing their face, and if he describes the way they will die, they must die this way if possible. If he simply writes their name, they just have heart failure.
Light is top of his class, a tennis prodigy, and devoted to his studies. He hopes to become a policeman someday, as his father is chief of police, and he hates criminals, having already run into a number of investigations and seen his father frustrated in proving people guilty who were obviously guilty.
Light starts acting altruistically, in a way that protects the innocent. But soon he is sure of his power, and afraid for his personal freedom of action, and he begins to change.
Power corrupts, and the amime is the story about Light's corruption and the loss of his humanity, as he slowly changes from a perfect student into a god of death.
An interesting side point for Anime fans: The term shinigami is translated as "Soul Reaper" in the Anime series "Bleach". If you watch episodes subtitled in English while listening to the Japanese sound tracks this becomes very clear. So the misshapen, bored, and deformed looking shinigami of Death Note are a different interpretation, but are the same sort of creature that the arguably beautiful Rukia Kushki from Bleach is.
